I've got a Nikon Coolpix P520 which has a built-in zoom lens with a 43:1 zoom ratio. When all the way out it looks about 2 inches longer than when it's all the way in. It goes from the 35mm equivalent of 28 - 1000 mm. There's also anti-vibration stuff so even without a tripod there's less blur.
These are a non-technical way to visualize that. There are some moon pictures elsewhere. The clumsy yellow circles are about the area that the next picture shows when zoomed in. These aren't clickable, they're all scaled down to 960 x 540. I did these when I first got it, fall of 2013.
